Cat Portion Calculator
Turn your cat’s daily calorie target into practical wet food, dry food, or mixed-feeding portions—per day and per meal.
Calculate Your Cat’s Food Portions
Use your veterinarian’s daily calorie target, or a calorie estimate you have already calculated. This tool converts calories into food quantities; it does not diagnose nutritional needs.
Daily Food Portions
How the Cat Portion Calculator Works
The calculator first subtracts any calories reserved for treats from the total daily target. It then divides the calories intended for complete cat food by the calorie density of the product you enter. Mixed feeding allocates calories between wet and dry food before converting each portion to grams.
Wet food grams/day = food kcal/day ÷ (kcal/container ÷ grams/container).
Grams/meal = grams/day ÷ number of meals.
Why the Food Label Matters
Two cat foods can have very different calorie densities. Use the calorie content for the exact product and flavor, not a generic estimate. If the product lists kcal per cup rather than kcal/kg, consult its grams-per-cup information or manufacturer to convert accurately.
How to Use Mixed Feeding
For a 50/50 calorie split, half of the calories reserved for complete food are supplied by wet food and half by dry food. That does not mean equal weights or equal volumes. A kitchen scale is generally more repeatable than estimating by eye.
Important Feeding Considerations
- Check that your chosen food is complete and balanced for your cat’s life stage.
- Use the daily target supplied by your veterinary team if your cat has a medical condition or prescribed diet.
- Monitor body condition and weight over time, and adjust with professional guidance.
- Do not use this tool to prescribe weight-loss calories, particularly for a cat that is not eating normally.
- Treats are optional; a common general upper limit is 10% of daily calories, and some cats need fewer or none.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a cat portion calculator the same as a calorie calculator?
No. A calorie calculator estimates daily energy needs. This portion calculator converts a daily calorie target into quantities of the specific food you are feeding.
Can I use kcal per 100 g from a dry food label?
Yes. Multiply kcal per 100 g by 10 to get kcal/kg. For example, 380 kcal per 100 g equals 3,800 kcal/kg.
Does the mixed feeding slider split food by weight?
No. It splits food calories. Wet food contains much more water than dry food, so equal calorie shares usually correspond to different gram amounts.
Should I subtract treats from the meal allowance?
Count all food and treat calories within the overall daily target. Do not substantially displace complete food with treats; ask your veterinarian about your cat’s individual diet.
Can I use this for kittens or cats with health conditions?
Only as a food-label conversion tool when you already have an appropriate daily calorie target. Kittens and cats with health conditions may need an individualized feeding plan.
